COSTA RICA
|
A small country but blessed with amazing
natural beauty, oceans on both sides, mountains and fertile
valleys in the center. Costa Rica boasts political stability
along with an abundance of natural and human resources. Bananas,
coffee and tourism are the countries main traditional export
earners, however, there are several free trade zones and computer
/ communications assembly projects are increasing.
Costa Ricans are friendly and hospitable, and are considered
the most educated people of Central America.
But, the population of four million inhabitants, and increasing;
is competing for space, increasing pressures to use forest lands,
already on the brink of extinction.
Come visit Costa Rica. Enjoy its beauty and see our sanctuaries.
Experience the forests you may help preserve.

Presentation
|
The pace of our daily lives pressures us
into becoming a machine of modern times, leaving us with little
time to stop an think about how we might rather than destroy
our planet. Thus, we are denying our children and grandchildren
and to all future generations, the opportunity for a healthy
environment, from pollution.
Let for a moment ease the foot from our accelerator and pause
to consider the opportunity to be a small part in the conservation
and preservation of our forests, becoming true adoptive parents
of a part of nature, and to be able to give to all present
and future generations of humanity.
To contribute with our Green Sanctuaries will allow us to
think with all tranquility that we going away, more and more
of the disturbing sentence: "Our Grandchildren; riding on
camels, and seeing a ruined an burnt earth, will curse their
grandparents for having created a desert for them".

ABOUT US
|
The Central American Foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine was formed by a group of professionals
dedicated lo the preservation of forests in Costa Rica and develop
the Traditional Chinese Medicine. We are working closely with
some of the large environmental organizations and Costa Rican
agencies. The Foundation has one member on the board of directors
from the Costa Rican government ). The Foundation’s organization
will allow donations to flow directly towards accomplishing
our mission.
The Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to the
conservation of tropical forests for the benefit of future generations.
Our aim is to purchase and maintain as much tropical primary
forest as possible. These sanctuary areas will protect and preserve
the forests, their habitats and ecosystems and their biodiversity
forever. These areas will be called Green Sanctuaries.
The Foundation has designed and will develop projects to pursue
alternatives to the destruction of tropical forests. Plans include
establishing centers for eco-tourism, chemical and pharmaceutical
research, education in biological and environmental disciplines.
Plans also include contributing lo the development of the communities
living close to the reserves by providing job opportunities
and improving the fields, of education and health.
The Foundation has focused initial preservation efforts in Costa
Rica because of the stable and supportive government and their
dedication to the environment (25% of the country is covered
by natural reserves and national parks). We are hopeful that
the project will influence other parts of the world to save
tropical forests as well.
The Central American Foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine
has the technical and professional resources to accomplish the
following:
1. Locate tropical forests and determine if they meet the criteria
established for being considered Green Sanctuaries.
2. Measure and establish property limits and subsequently maintain
them.
3. Describe the forest, including an inventory anxd identification
of its plant and animal life.
4. Supervise and monitor the forest’s condition, and observe
the composition and changes undergone by its plant and animal
life.
5. Reforestation projects when necessary.
6. Involve local communities as partners in the conservation
of the environment.
7. Create similar environment education projects. |
MISSION
|
To create a Green Sanctuary of tropical
forests to protect and preserve their habitats, ecosystems
and biological diversity; and to convince humanity that: the
protection of these sanctuaries is to protect and assure our
future.
|
WHAT IS THE CURRENT CONDITION OF TRE TROPICAL
FORESTS?
|
Even though tropical forests only cover
7% of the earth’s surface, some of these forests house
the richest ecosystems of the world.
Tropical forests are located in a region close to the equator,
in Africa, Central and South America and Asia. Their conditions
are ideal for the development of many species of plants and
animals. The tropical forests are the main source of a large
number of modem medicines, There are many species that are
in the process of being discovered. This is another reason
why it is so important to maintain and preserve these forests.
The population explosion has been an important element in
the reduction of forests, since the need for living space
has not been handled properly. Also, the regulations against
uncontrolled tree felling are not always respected. This has
caused a global catastrophe. The tropical forests act as air
and water regulators and purifiers, as well as temperature
moderators. Therefore, they prevent extreme temperatures in
the tropics and reduce erosion and soil degradation. Without
the tropical forests and the habitats they provide, the endangered
species would go unprotected, the wetlands would disappear.
The rain would become scarcer and the quality of air would
be come very poor. The earth’s surface would become
warmer and warmer, the holes in the ozone layer would get
larger and the weather patters around the world would definitely
change. The destructive impact caused by natural phenomena
(El Niño and La Niña) is already painfully evident.

SAVING TROPICAL FOREST IS URGENT! THE LAST
BREATH OF EARTH
CRITERIA USED IN THE SELECTION OF TROPICAL FOREST SANCTUARIES.
|
The Central American Foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine is working in conjunction with governmental
and private conservationist groups in the selection of forests
at risk. Protection has become URGENT, due to the following
reasons:
1. These are areas of great bio-diversity, very unique and
exceptional.
2. Preservation of species and habitats; particularly those
still unaltered.
3. Primary and secondary forests are essential to the water
supply ín populated areas.
4. Biological corridors that extend the species territory
by interconnecting wild protected areas.
5. Preservation of critical areas bordering natural reserves
or national parks.
6. Preservation of areas represented in the different "Life
Zones" ("Classification of the World's Life Zones"
by Dr. L.R. Holdridge Tropical Scientific
Center, 1996).
7. Preservation of areas containing endangered species.

FOREST PROJECTS IN PROGRESS
|
Rancho Laurel
The Foundation has recently saved 2000 hectares of primary forests
from the chainsaw.
Rancho Laurel is located south of Limón, bordering La
Amistad National Park. lt has a vast array of plants, animals
and natural water springs. The project called Rancho Laurel
contains a commercial inventory of forest species (approximately
175 commercial species have been found there, out of which,
16 are endangered species, and 36 are unique to Costa Rica).
This property, had a formal management program, including their
plan for felling trees to be submitted to MINAE for their approval.
Nevertheless, The Foundation the was able to negotiate a trust
agreement with its owner to acquire it. Thus, RESCUING IT FROM
THE, CHAINSAW.
This pristine forest contains more than one million trees, some
as large as 3 meters in diameter. A treasure of bird species
can be found here, not to mention the vast array of insects,
reptiles and amphibians. The forest has four lagoons and numerous
sources of water, which become the rivers that are the main
source of water supply for the province of Limón and
the Caribbean coastal cities. There are unique geologic formations,
as well as archaeological sites with the remains of Indian settlements.
This forest must be made part of the sanctuary, otherwise, the
alternative would be its deforestation, destruction of its habitat,
and the elimination of wetlands, plant and animal life. |

GENERAL PLAN
|
Protecting the tropical forests is so important
as they are the basis of conservation in the ecological chain
formed by the renewable natural resources; whether in a specific
area or throughout the territory of a country.
The main obstacles for an efficient management of the natural
resources and the protection of the environment are
a. Lack of public awareness and understanding of the environment;
b. Lack of basic information about natural resources and the
environment;
c. Inaccurate development strategies;
d. Little or no surveillance, to prevent the accelerated destruction
of the plants and animals life.
e. the degradation of the soils.
The Foundation was created as part of a macro plan, whose
primary objective is to obtain full protection for Costa Rica's
tropical forests, and to provide adequate technical management,
so that they become true Green Sanctuaries. In the long run.
Their desire is to contribute to the global objective in the
fight against planet warning, and also to participate with
national entities such as MINAE, ICE, etc. For this reason,
we have included within The Foundation’s structure,
projects oriented to make up for the past overdue deficit
we have with the human race. (Refer to Organization Chart).
The Foundation began its programs with the acquisition of
2,000 hectares, which are part of the biological corridor
surrounding La Amistad National Park, in the Talamanca Mountain
Range, province of Limón. This area was selected due
to the conditions urgently demanding protection. Also, this
area is the main water source for a large number of adjoining
populations, including the city of Limón. It has 60%
of its land constituting a primary forest. This land needs
protection against the strong political pressure for uncontrolled
felling of trees for timber.
|
SHORT TERM SPECIFIC PROJECTS |
Among the Foundation’s overall plans
is the development of a number of projects oriented to successfully
achieve the total protection of the tropical forests, this
will include al] of the resources of this green sanctuary,
which is not only our patrimony, but gift to the entire planet.
The Foundation has selected the area bordering La Amistad
Nation Park as our initial protection location which acts
as a buffer zone containing the impact exercised by human
beings upon the green areas. Our starting point will be Rancho
Laurel, a 2,000 hectare ranch in the Talamanca Mountain Range.
|
STUDIES AND PROJECTS TO BE DEVELOPED BY
TRE FOUNDATION FOR THE PROTECTION OF TROPICAL FORESTS
|
Even though our goals, and philanthropic ambitions
are oriented towards, the protection of the environment, (see
organization chart), the projects the desires to complete in
the short term, are considered the most critical problems in
this region.
As a consequence of the loss of significant areas of tropical
forests, severe changes are being provoked in the hydric balances
of the principal river basins in the areas of (Aguas Zarcas,
María Luisa, Gobán, Elenita River, Vizcaya, and
Banano), subsequently accelerating the erosion process.
Constant pressure is exercised, not by colonists, but by timber
traders, desiring a deforestation option. This pressure is directly
or indirectly sponsored by certain governmental agencies, which,
unintentionally (let us believe) grant exploitation licenses
due to poor management plans and lack forestry experience. Poachers
also exert pressures on the animal life of the area. Other critical
problems include a misdirected classification of the use of
land, under utilization of forest resources, soil degradation,
erosion and sedimentation. |
PROJECTS
|
The Foundation has begin its protection
campaign with the following projects.
1. Marking of boundaries, training and surveillance of the
area of Rancho Laurel.
2. Inventory and organization of hydric resources, by establishing
an agro meteorological network in Rancho Laurel.
3. Detailed inventory of plant life, focusing on endangered
and scarce species.
4. Environmental impact studies of the ecological belt surrounding
La Amistad National Park.
5. General inventory of animal life, including a plan for
the management and conservation of wildlife.
6. Detailed soils studies .
7. Environmental education courses offered to residents of
the area and surrounding populations (Bananito, María
Luisa, Aguas Zarcas, La Bomba).
8. Acquisition of properties.
9. Plan for the management and conservation of forest resources.
10. Possession and use of land.
11. Plan for the reforestation and forestry management of
clear land.
12. Ecological tourism plan and projections.
13. Plan for rural development alternatives.
|
EDUCATION AND SURVEILLANCE.
|
Courses and Publicity Campaigns
The Foundation will prepare and dictate courses, oriented
to creating, awareness regarding the protection of our environment
and emphasizing the essential role of tropical forests in
the conservation of soil, water and clean air.
The primary effort will be to directed towards the education
of the teachers and authorities of each region, so that they
subsequently transfer their knowledge to the schoolchildren.
Campaigns will be developed by means of illustrative booklets,
rural expansion, radio and television spots, and the Internet.
Surveillance and Forest Rangers
The properties acquired by the Foundation will be secured
by, forest rangers duly trained in courses dictated by the
institution, and in coordination with the MINAE.
|
CONSERVATION
|
Acquisition of areas
The Foundation will progressively acquire areas of ecological.
or environmental interest in need of protection or recuperation.
The Foundation acquisition of the 2,000 hectares in the province
of Limón, is part of the buffer belt of La Amistad National
Park. |
| MANAGEMENT AND ENRICHMENT OF TRE FOREST |
The Foundation intends to carry, out conservation
management plans in the tropical forests acquired, which are
under the Foundation care. The Foundation also intends to enrich
the forest with indigenous plants of the area in keeping it
as close as possible to the original forest. |
REFORESTATON |
The Foundation will undertake reforestation
plans, which include planting, indigenous species in deforested
sites. Another objective is to protect the water sources.
The Foundation will establish nursery, and will carry out
reforestation campaigns in rural communities.
|
RESEARCH
|
Hydric Resources and Soils
The Foundation intends to take an inventory of all the areas
it acquires, and classify the river basins, hydric sources
and soils. We hope to, provide the best management possible
and to project those areas that generate, social welfare.
|
| EVALUATION OF THE ENVIRONMENT AND ITS PLANT
AND ANIMAL LIFE |
In order to provide adequate protection to the environment,
one of the Foundation’s projects is performing detailed
studies of the plant and animal life of each of the areas
under its custody. We will provide support to other environmental
institutions by evaluating and applying the necessary corrective
measures with respect to plants, animals and the geology itself.
|
| SERVICES |
Technical Information Center
Among The Foundation projects is the creation of a technical
information center, whose primary objective is to collect
all pertinent information about the natural resources and
the environment. This information will be available to the
public, and will not be limited to the center's volumes. Instead,
it will be a source to locate data about anything written
on these technical topics.
|
| RECEPTIVE TOURISM |
The Foundation highly qualified personnel
will be made available for ecological
tourism, so that visitors, may fully enjoy and make the best
out of our Green Sanctuaries. These ecologists will also conduct
environmental education workshops "in situ". We
plan to offer these environmental protection workshops to
all tourists, schools, Universities, and general public.
|
INFORMATIONAL TOURISM
|
In this aspect, The Foundation will coordinate
with. the ecologists of other countries, so that it couId
issue alternatives for educational tourism regarding the protection
of the environment.
|
COMMUNITY AND SOCIAL WELFARE
|
Social infrastructure
The Foundation will develop, social welfare programs and an.
infrastructure in. poor rural communities, which will include:
schools, health clinics, dental clinics, school, cafeterias,
and other community services. lt will also develop awareness
about the environment and educational programs for children
as well as adults.
The programs will be planned to meet the needs established
by the community representatives, together with the people
in charge of managing these plans. |
HOUSING DEVELOPMENT |
The Central American Foundation of Traditional
Chinese Medicine has planned, as one of its social welfare
concepts, to develop housing projects for those families living
on the river banks, their well known problems become worse
during the rainy season. These plans will be executed based
on each family's efforts and ability taking into account the
family's contribution to carry them out. The Foundation will
hire specialists to generate the plans we desire to make the
best use of the available economic resources. The communities
must develop a philanthropic concept with respect to conservation
of the environment.
|
MARKETING |
Considering that our product is merely
philanthropic, (the protection of the tropical forests to
improve the environment, The Foundation will provide solutions
according to the needs of the moment. For The Foundation to
be able to achieve its objectives, it will carry out different
marketing alternatives to obtain enough resources to begin
its projects.
|
ECOLOGICAL |
The Central American Foundation of Traditional
Chinese Medicine plans to develop worldwide projects of ecological
marketing, by promoting the treasures we have in our tropical
forests, which are not only Costa Rica's patrimony but a global
benefit.
|
CONSERVATIONIST |
The Central American Foundation of Traditional
Chinese Medicine, as a conservationist entity, considers an
essential element of our mission. Teaching the benefits of
protecting the environment, 0therw¡se, lf we, as responsible
human beings, do not follow its line of action and reach a
balance, life may be much to short. On the contrary, the conservation
of our natural resources will help eliminate many of the problems
the world is facing today.
|
RESEARCH |
Another project of The Central American
Foundation of Traditional Chinese Medicine will be to prepare
joint plans with the entities specializing in these topics.
We hope to do research on medicinal plants, families of flowers
and animals, as well as insets soon to he discovered in the
tropical forests.
|
PUBLICITY |
The Central American Foundation of Traditional
Chinese Medicine intends to create a new philanthropic concept
with respect to publicity. Current publicity teaches little
about the damage caused by human beings to the environment.
The new publicity must he directed to children, since they
are the future of the world.
|
BY-PRODUCTS
|
The benefits obtained, besides being, an.
economic solution, must, he used to prepare other plans oriented
to the subsequent betterment of the community itself the Foundation
may establish plans with the participation of the communities,
regarding by-products. These may include dumps, solutions
to recycling problems, treatment of sewage and others.

Introduction
|
Around the world the urgency to protect
and strengthen the ecological systems of the planet is well
known. Industrialized countries are slowly being made to contribute
to preserve forests and animal species that give life to the
Earth and also contribute in the development of the health.
Different ways have been made available for corporations and
people that want to contribute funds to help in this long-term
process, of preserving the planet for our own benefit and
that of future generations.
In Costa Rica, the Forestry Law establishes that it is essential
for the Government to oversee that the land is well preserved,
protected, and that the resources are well managed, according
to principles of rationality in the use of renewable natural
resources.
The Law also contemplates other ways to help organizations
that carry out activities related to the improvement of those
natural resources and promote and teach (make people conscious)
of the need for the planet’s conservation.
